Artists from Tulgeen will be presenting a beautiful exhibition entitled Ways of Speaking at Spiral Gallery, Bega from 4-23 August. Representing more than thirty ways of speaking, the collection from the Artists in the Garage gives an overview of the visual output from the group over the last two years.

Art in the Garage is just one activity provided to people with a disability at Tulgeen Disability Services. This activity nurtures the view of individual artists in a one-on-one way, with trained mentors, who assist each person in their way of “seeing” and expressing themselves. Artists work for one to two hours per week, in the comfort of one of the three fully equipped studios in Bega.

“Art in the Garage gives me a sense of joy. I love what I can achieve in the Garage. From a blank canvas to a work of art that I can sell. It makes me so happy,” says Tulgeen Art in the Garage participant Emily Brown.

“Art in the Garage provides a calm area of solace in a busy world full of competing demands and commitments. Our Artists create their own space with music, warmth and comfort. With its one on one attention, artists actually find it very nurturing,” said Art in the Garage Mentor, Jenny McKenzie.

“We have seen an increase in self-esteem and from our Artists. Art in the Garage allows those living with a disability to be part of our community through their self-expression. Sometimes communicating is difficult for somebody living with disability. Art allows our clients to communicate without rules or restriction,” she said.

Professionally curated by Bega Valley Regional Gallery’s Director, Iain Dawson, the work on show will be evidence of the richness of view being generated at the Garage, as each artist continues on their journey of discovery, developing their individual ways of seeing and speaking.

Ways of Speaking is being presented with the support of the Tulgeen Group, South East Arts as part of their Swell: The Art of Being Well strategy, Bega Valley Regional Gallery and Create NSW.

The exhibition opens at 5.00pm on Friday 4 August at Spiral Gallery in Church Street, Bega. Everyone is welcome to the opening, artworks will be for sale. The exhibition runs until 23 August. For more information please contact Spiral Gallery on 64925322.
