TRACEY CREIGHTON – The Artist
From an early age I knew I wanted to be an artist. I was blessed to have grown up within a family who loved to paint, draw and design. My grandmother was a wonderful water-colourist and oil painter, following in the style of the Australian Impressionists, my father was a builder who designed and drew intricate house plans, and my mother created and produced colourful fashion garments. Their positive and creative influence enabled me to see the beauty in life and nature through a spectrum of light, line, colour, pattern and texture.
My art career commenced in my teens when I studied and worked as a graphic designer. Composition, colour, balance and harmony were paramount in every design project and twenty years later when I moved into fine art, I found all those intrinsic elements were vital to all work regardless of the style or period of art.
When painting I draw on my own experiences whether they be spiritual, emotional or physical. I don’t intentionally set out to produce art about any subject or thing in particular but rather allow the painting to lead me. Sometimes my loose initial marks gives me a sense of how the work might develop but I resist the urge to force the painting in any one direction in case the painting becomes contrived and overworked, losing it’s energy and playfulness.
I allow the artwork to direct me as I rejoice in each brush stroke, remaining conscious of the juxtaposition of every element, resulting in a finished painting which evolved naturally. It is only when the painting has clear direction that I intrude on the space and inject my own thoughts and ideas.
My art is infused with strong design, soft linear elements, layers of thin washes or sometimes bold, textural paint, manifesting in a kaleidoscope of colour. Each painting offers me an opportunity to reach into a sacred place within myself, tap into an intangible feeling, then capture and express it in a painterly manner. Each project is a new adventure, each work fashioned to reflect a mood or topic dear to me, whether it be a specific theme, statement of cultural issues or simply a representation of the magnificence of nature.
The past twenty years as a visual artist has seen me develop works which in turn leads to the next body of work. There is a constant and ever flowing dynamism of ideas and techniques which evolve perpetually, allowing me to explore what seems to be the ‘endless possibilities’ of art, and giving the viewer an opportunity to make a connection with my art and discover their own fundamentally curious nature.
Commissioned works are happily undertaken.
TRACEY CREIGHTON – The Tutor
I have been teaching art for nearly 35 years since establishing Queensland’s first private graphic art college (CATC) in Brisbane in 1982. I taught design, typography and finished art to my students who were preparing for a career in the advertising industry.
I ventured into fine art in 1996 after training in America with a young contemporary artist and so began my love of paint and colour. I teach private art lessons and small group workshops here in Merimbula and also interstate.
Lessons and workshops are conducted at intervals right through the year. See my website for more details.
