The ninth annual art exhibition of 16 friends known as the Gully Gang will open on Saturday, 27 October in the Raglan Gallery, Lambie Street. The Hon Justice Virginia Bell of the High Court of Australia will officially open the exhibition at 3pm, and all are very welcome to attend.
Whenever possible, the Gully Gang members come together to paint in a very social atmosphere. As well as deriving stimulation and encouragement from sharing ideas, these occasions provide relaxation as well as the challenge of problem solving in order to develop better art practice.
The initial exhibition was held to motivate the artists to meet deadlines in order to prepare work for public display, but proved so successful that it’s been held every year since. With so many different artists, there is a very diverse range of styles to be enjoyed. Each show features landscapes, still life, abstract and geometric paintings as well as mixed media, prints and ceramics. Jenny Coopes sets the group a challenge each year – this year’s theme is “Vessels” and will be judged by Angela Seward.
Local gangsters taking part are Alison Starr, Bernadette Nater, Debra Theiler, Helen Bohl, Jan Carpenter, Jim Hart and Lesley Henstridge. Those from further afield are Gaye Beyers, Kerri Lenehan, Katrina Daly, Jenny Coopes, Libby Blainey, Ollie Henstridge, David Morgan, Patricia Boisgard and Jenny Brown.
This year’s guest gangsters are Samantha Donnelly, Penny Chapman and Merilyn Minell, all of whom have provided invaluable help to the Gang in the past.
The official opening by the Hon Justice Virginia Bell really should not be missed – everyone is most welcome to hear this impressive speaker and to enjoy both the paintings and some delicious refreshment. Pre-opening sales are permitted from 0930 on the day.
