Artist Statement
I do these quick drawings or watercolour paintings on watercolour paper, or in my notebook every day. Usually every morning, as soon as there is enough light to see, I pick up my paintbox and start. I am always surprised at what emerges on the paper. There are multiple styles and subjects. I work spontaneously…at that time of day there are very few defences. At first this was just a private activity, I had no idea that anybody else would like these images or even find them interesting, but I understand now that most people feel these things too and relate to them personally.
I find this way of working is a wonderful way to keep my skills honed and to bring forth fresh images that then feed my larger paintings.
