Artist Statement

I have had the good fortune to choose a landscape in which to live. My home and studio are surrounded by dense eucalypt forest on the shore of a mangrove fringed, estuarine lake. It is very beautiful. Although I have no history with this land, no childhood explorations here and no ancestral connection, I am comfortable here. It feels like my place, the place I need to live, and a place that I can learn from in my own lifetime.

To describe this landscape in charcoal, ink and paint is my way of learning its intricacies, a way of noticing and of celebrating those easily unnoticed moments, gone with the movement of the sun, the change of the tide or a careless footstep. My work is not only a direct response to my surrounding environment, but a visual exploration of a way of living in this landscape.  The subject of food is often referenced in my work; the food garden, the gardener, the importance of local and seasonal food and the companionship of a shared meal.
