Cathy Jarratt
Artist Statement
Born and raised in the Monaro high country, and with a lifetime of living by the sea, my work is inspired by the elements and the understanding of the constant challenges nature undergoes just to survive. I am drawn to fragile but durable aspects of life, especially in objects found by the seashore where the fate of its inhabitants is left in the hands of the moon, changing tides, wind, rain and sun. These delicate forms, beautiful textures and unique patterns are often woven, forged and built upon in my work.
Biography
A BVA graduate of Sydney College of the Arts in Object, Art and Design (Jewellery & Object), Cathy Jarratt’s contemporary jewellery is often constructed in fine silver wire or unconventional non-precious wires which she knits and crochets to form elegant and transparent wearable pieces. Preferring to make one-off pieces Cathy also enjoys working with precious and semi-precious metals, sometimes adding an element of surprise or curiosity to her designs. As a member of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia NSW, her work has been selected for group exhibitions including the National Wine Centre in Adelaide, Horus and Delorus Gallery Pyrmont - and in other selected exhibitions at the National Contemporary Jewellery Award Griffith, Zu Design Gallery Adelaide and Breathing Colours Gallery Balmain.
Before becoming a contemporary jewellery designer, Cathy worked across other art practices including printmaking, oil painting, life drawing and screen-printing, and was a member of Warringah Printmakers in Sydney for seven years.
